need help finding a new device

Jul 24, 2010 20:53

Hi I have been BL for a couple of years now and I am finally moving to a new phone (I am buying an iphone 4), I have been using a friends ipod touch for a few weeks buying apps and trying to find something as good as BL, I am sad to say I have not found much. I am still buying the iphone because I dont think there are many other options than getting a nokia phone and running garnet vm (which I have never used one in person (a nokia phone or garnet vm)). Well if I knew of a good palm emulator that worked in android or iphone this would be an easier task, but the only emulator for iphone that I know of (styletap) does not have working audio, which makes it useless to me. I dont want to spend more than 100$-150$ on something that I would only be using BL and a few other palm apps on, so it would be best to get an android device or ipad that I would be using anyway. I am probably going to break down and buy an ipad also, this is a big deal for me because I have never owned an ipod or iphone because I dont like itunes (actually I really hate itunes) and the whole closed filesystem on iOS devices.

Any suggestions? Anyone having these sort of issues?

Really I would love to see BL ported too iphone or android. I bought nanoloop for ipod touch (which was only a gameboy tracker for many years) and its not anywhere near the same category as BL, but I think the success of nanoloop on iOS might be a good model for BL on iOS. I think a lot of people are waiting for something like BL on iOS or android, but there is really only a couple of complete production apps to choose from currently. Most iOS music apps I have used are really just toys. I am going to work on some apps myself, but I would rather someone else do it.

iPhone app? This won't happen from me.

I don't remember if I've posted it here, but again: iOS rhymes with sadness. The closeness of the store, the fact that people just can't download an app from a site and drag and drop it to their phone, the fact that developers have to reinvent crazy mechanisms to allow something as simple as data transfer between apps, the truckloads of crap that pass as "apps", the restrictions on which programming tools can be used - all this is just ridiculous. You have to really want to make a lot of money to accept to cope with this. It's not computing and technology, it's Las Vegas.

I don't own a smartphone, but I'm all for Android. Improve the tools for native app development, reduce the latency of audio and maybe we'll have something good to develop on.

I totally agree with you in every aspect. I hate iTunes and apples restrictiveness, however my zire is really dying and my centro is almost intollerable for BL use, for a few reasons. One the screen is ridiculously small, two I am constantly having memory errors, and plugging in headphones has the effect of randomly frying the audio (headphones, speaker , and mic) I have fried a centro and a treo by simply plugging in a wired headset (I looked this up and seems to be a reoccurring problem for treo's, using a wired headset or headphones has the unwanted effect of drandomly estroying all audio function of the device). So this means I have to buy that 30$ Bluetooth audio app to use SAG additionally I have to keep my inferior Bluetooth headphones charged simply to work with BL on my centro. I want to go back to working with something like my zire that did not have headphone issues, but I can find palm devices in good condition for a good price. I would be spending a couple of hundred dollars because I really want to run BL, I love BL more that any other portable DAW but I can't spend 200$ for a device I would mostly only be using for BL. I need to validate my purchase by pirchasing a versatile modern (not to mention faster) device. I might drop 50-70$ easily if I could a T3 or a TX but is completely improbably (if anyone wants to sell me one lightly used one, here is a buyer). I have never bought into the iPod restrictive mentality, but with android there is the fragmentation issues, some apps don't run on certain hardware (its like windows mobil under the illusion of being opensource (datamining and the android market has similar problems as iTunes)). I have looked aggressively and thoroughly and only found maybe 2

Cont.

audio apps and great gmail integration (granted I have not seen everything ever created but I have been all over android forums and found that android users seem to not be using there devices very much for music.) I am just saying the market for smartphones is forcing users like me to no longer afford the luxury of a separate palm pilot type device (spending so much on a smartphone that I cannot spend another 200-300$ more on a palm pilot, which I would buy if there was a palm (a non-smartphone but a dedicated palm type device) with something improved, faster and a modern OS like webos and if I could spend 100$ and get a smartphone that does everything I need (and won't become horrible to use in six months... The game is rigged). I can't do that at this point I need 3G tethering for my laptop and something fast enough to fetch my 300-400 email a day, I need a good camera with HD video. My centro just can't do what I need anymore, for use with BL or otherwise. I don't mean to offend your sensibilities or anything, I'm just being practical. And again, I am really looking for ideas on a second device that will not cost a fortune, but will be usable for other apps that are new and current (aka android, iOS, webos, symbian (not very high on my list), maemo). I found a seven inch android tablet for 150$ its from china and probably is not made to last, but I might buy it if I could either emulate BL or an android version of BL was released. The processor on the tablet is garbage but it's about the same as my zire 72. I'm just throwing ideas around seeing what comes back, I have already ordered an iPad and probably (sold my soul) will buy an phone. I just really want to use BL and have almost no options to do so.

looks good but have you useed it? If not I'll email them. I need to know if it does beatslicing, how many BPM's(at least 300bpms is good for me) and if it will do 32nd notes or only 16th. These are this biggest issues I have with portable audio apps is usually, no beatslicing, they max out usually at 220bpms (thereabouts) and the best I can usually get is 16th notes. But with nanostudio I do like the range in time signatures and the synths in the demo seem good, but one down side I saw was only 6 tracks. Anyway if no one has used it I will email them and maybe give it a try.

Actually, has anyone tried bhajis loops on a palm pre plus?

Maybe there will be an option soon for me to buy an unlocked pre. This would be ideal because the pre is also perfect for tethering. But I did hear something about audio not functioning properly on the palm emulator on the pre. Don't know if that is true or not, but that might also be cool if HP actually produces a webos tablet, maybe a palm emulator will run on that and I can run BL tablet sized. Pipe dreams probably.
